Rio Olympics silver medallist shuttler PV Sindhu and bronze winner grappler Sakshi Malik along with gymnast Dipa Karmakar and badminton coach Pullela Gopichand were today presented BMW cars by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar at Hyderabad.
India’s goodwill ambassador at the Rio Olympics, Tendulkar handed over the keys of the luxury cars to the four sportspersons at a function held at the Gopichand Badminton Academy.
Chamundeshwarnath, President of the Hyderabad District Badminton Association, gifted the BMWs.
Under the guidance of chief coach Gopichand, Sindhu clinched the silver medal in women’s singles making her the first Indian woman sportsperson to win a silver in the Olympics. Wrestler Sakshi had bagged a bronze in women’s freestyle 58kg class.
Dipa who missed a medal by a whisker, had finished fourth in the vault event and stunned the world by attempting the risky Produnova vault.
Sachin took a selfie with the three women and Gopichand amid cheers by those present.
Speaking on the occasion, Sachin asked them to continue their victorious performances and bring more laurels to the country.
He was all praise for the medallists as well as Dipa and described Gopichand as the real hero. “I am sure they will bring more medals for the country and continue to make India proud.”
Chamundeshwarnath, a former cricketer and businessman, had initially announced that he will gift a BMW to Sindhu but later decided to give it to the three others as well.
Speaking on the occasion Gopichand said: “It is not ‘save the girl child’ but ‘saved by the girl child,'” referring to India’s pride being saved by the three girls in Rio.
